Geolocation Network FAQs
Why am I being asked to install a plugin?
As per regulatory standards, it is mandatory that you be located within an authorized state for BetMGM Horse Racing to be able to place a wager. The plugin is a small piece of software that verifies your location as required by regulations. You must install this plugin to login, deposit and wager successfully. More information on how we use this location is explained in our Privacy Policy.
What type of network connection do I need to be geolocated?
You must be connected to the internet (PC/Mac/mobile) or have cellular service (mobile device). There is no need to be connected to a wireless network, but you must have Wi-Fi enabled. For play from a mobile device, you must also have Location Services turned on.
Can I use my personal cell phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot and connect to another device to play?
This is not recommended as an inconsistent or weak network connection will cause the geolocation checks to fail.
I am within an authorized state for Horse Racing and have no IP/Wi-Fi issues. Why am I still unable to wager?
Any VPN or VNC software can interfere with the geolocation process. These kinds of software cannot be run during gameplay. Some examples include: Witopia, OpenVPN, or HMA. Remote desktop software can also interfere with this process. Software such as LogMeIn or GoToMyPC cannot be run during gameplay. To check if these programs are still running and force these programs to quit on a PC, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to access your computer’s Task Manager. From the Task Manager you can force individual programs to quit; make sure you see them disappear from the list to verify they’re shut down. To do this on a Mac, use the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder of your Applications. From the Activity Monitor you can force individual programs to quit; make sure you see them disappear from the list to verify they’re shut down. If this does not resolve the issue, you may need to remove them from your computer completely. To do this on a PC, go to the Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall, and select/remove the program from the list. To do this on a Mac, locate the program in your Applications folder and drag it to the trash.
How do I turn on my computer’s Wi-Fi signal/adapter?
If you are on a Mac, our systems will automatically turn on your Wi-Fi, and this will not need to be done manually. If you are on a PC, this process may vary slightly depending on the version of Windows you are using.
For Windows 10, right-click on the Windows logo on the bottom left -> Network Connections -> Select “Wi-Fi”. In case the wireless adapter is disabled, enable it first by right clicking on “Wi-Fi” and choosing “Enable” -> Right click on “Wi-Fi” -> choose “Connect/Disconnect” -> Turn Wi-Fi on -> Select the network from the list of available and press “Connect” button.
For Windows 8, from the Apps screen, swipe/scroll to the right and find the Windows System category -> Control Panel -> In the top right of the Control Panel open the View dropdown menu -> select Category -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> select Change adapter settings from the left column -> click on your Wi-Fi adapter (will be called something like Wi-Fi or Wireless Network Connection) and select enable.
For Windows 7 or Vista, go the Start Menu -> Control Panel -> In the top right of the Control Panel open the View dropdown menu -> select Category -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> select Change adapter settings from the left column -> right click on your Wi-Fi adapter (will be called something like Wi-Fi or Wireless Network Connection) and select enable.
What if I am incorrectly identified as being outside the state while on a PC/laptop?
If you are within the borders of a legal state where BetMGM Horse Racing is authorized and you are being restricted from playing on a PC/laptop, there may be an issue locating you via Wi-Fi. Make sure that you have your Wi-Fi signal/capability turned on and that you see at least two other Wi-Fi signals available in your area. If your computer is not equipped with Wi-Fi, you will not be able to access any wagering services on our site.
The IP address assigned by your internet service provider could also be associated with a neighboring state instead of the state where you are located, which will cause you to fail the geolocation check. If you have a static IP address (this may be a premium service) you cannot update your IP address on your own - please contact your internet service provider to request this change. Most users will have a dynamic IP address that will automatically change periodically; however, you can also try unplugging your modem and/or router for 5-10 seconds to reset the IP address.
What happens when I move outside of the state while I am playing?
At any point in time, if we identify that you are not physically located in a state authorized by BetMGM Horse Racing, your bets will be terminated.
If I’m located within an authorized state, but near the state borders, will I be accurately located within the correct state?
In most cases, yes. However, if you are very close to the border, you may be blocked from playing and will need to move further away from the border and try again. Your IP address may also be incorrectly placing you in a neighboring state, and you will need to correct your IP address.
What if I use an outdated internet service provider and can’t be accurately located?
Some outdated internet service providers may reroute your internet connection to another location and cause your IP address to originate from somewhere outside the state.
Please contact your internet service provider to seek assistance with correcting the location. You could also try accessing the internet from another location/connection source.
