What are the different types of races?

  • Maiden: Horses that have yet to win.
  • Maiden claiming: Non-winners that can be purchased in the race.
  • Claiming: Horses that are eligible to be purchased in the race. The most common type of race and have various conditions.
  • Allowance: The next step up from claiming races. These races vary in the conditions set by the track. The weight the horse carries varies due to certain factors.
  • Stakes: Top racehorses compete in stakes with higher money and prestige. These can vary from a few thousand dollars to millions of dollars like the Kentucky Derby, Dubai World Cup and Saudi Cup.
  • Graded Stakes: These are the top races and designated by Grade 1 (G1), Grade 2 (G2), and Grade 3 (G3). You will see international stakes listed as Group, which means the same.

*All race types can vary in purse money. Horses that may not win at a certain level may work their way down. Horses that win may work their way up.
