What happens if one of my horse’s scratches?

Horses are sometimes scratched prior to a race, which may affect the bets you’ve already placed. If this occurs, tickets are generally cancelled or your selection will be replaced with the post time favorite for that race. Host track rules always apply. With many host tracks, the rules below apply:

  • Win/Place/Show - If time permits, you may cancel your bet and resubmit. If not, you will receive a full refund once the race is official.
  • Exacta, Quinella, Trifecta, Superfecta - Partial refunds are given if you have more than one selection to cover the bet. Example – $1 Exacta box – 2,4,6 and the 6 scratches. You will receive a partial refund of $4 and still have the 2,4 Exacta box.
  • Doubles – If there is a scratch in the first leg, you will receive a refund for the combinations involving the scratched horse. If the scratch occurs in the second leg and after the first leg is run, there is no refund.
  • Pick 3 – Post time favorites are substituted for the scratched runners except for races run in CA, DE, FL, KY, NY, and WV. In NY, KY, FL, CA, DE, and WV there is a refund if the horse(s) scratches before the start of the first leg (once the final leg is declared official). Please check host track rules to confirm, as host track rules always apply.
  • All other multi-race bets – The scratched runner(s) are replaced with the post time favorite. Please check host track rules to confirm, as host track rules always apply.
